A fully landscaped front yard—no lawn, no blank stretches of turf—can feel like a quiet revelation. For Rachael, Kevin, and their pup Ferdinand, the transformation began with a clear vision: a space that looked natural, welcoming, and quietly intentional. Gardens ALIVE Design shaped the project around having a plan and recognizable patterns all carefully balanced with a natural softness. The garden reads as cohesive yet comfortable . . . with a whisper of WOW! The palette leaned into their love of shades of pinks, lime, white, and every shade of green, forming a color story that framed their red entry door like a spotlight and THE destination. Upright forms gave vertical touch points to the space, while a few weeping elements added the horizontal layers —just enough to keep the eye curious without tipping into chaos.
What made this project especially meaningful was the partnership. Gardens ALIVE Design doesn’t just hand over a plan; the process moves from Introductory Consultation to Design Coaching to Plant Delivery to Container Design Services—a full arc where the clients’ dreams become the design itself. Rachael and Kevin shaped the direction at every step, and once the plan was ready, they took on the heavy lifting: amendment, mulch, watering, planting, and all the hands-on work that brings a landscape to life. Their involvement makes the garden feel deeply personal, not just installed but created.
Their style blended cottage warmth with Pacific Northwest familiarity, landing in that sweet spot where everything feels effortless. Boulders and containers added year-round timelessness without shouting for attention, and the new curved entry path invited visitors to slow down and actually see the landscape. Each curve was made more purposeful by placing containers at the bend, so it felt as though the path had grown around them. This gave the garden a sense of discovery—small moments of delight that unfold gradually instead of all at once. The design also embraced a theme of “order that doesn’t look orderly.” Repeated colors and plant forms created cohesion, but the arrangement stayed loose enough to feel organic. It is a creative collection with a quiet rhythm.
Ecologically, the shift away from lawn was a major goal. A fully planted front yard supports birds, bees, and other pollinators by offering nectar, shelter, and seasonal interest that turf simply can’t provide. Once established, this kind of landscape becomes lower maintenance than a lawn because it doesn’t demand weekly mowing, constant watering, or repeated fertilizing. Instead, the plants knit together into a self-sustaining community: roots stabilize soil, foliage shades out weeds, and the whole system becomes more resilient year after year. The landscape becomes a living ecosystem—dynamic, resilient, and full of life.
Rachael and Kevin were wonderful clients to work with and excellent collaborators. Their enthusiasm, ideas, and trust shaped the project into something uniquely theirs—yet unmistakably Gardens ALIVE Design. Their willingness to embrace the process made the landscape come to life in a way that felt personal, joyful, and deeply meaningful.
