Well, do you? It is nearing the end of summer and as the floral displays from perennials start to fade in your landscape, this is the moment of stardom for dahlias. They cherish these hot dry summer days (given they have had adequate watering) and burst forth with a encore of ‘fall out of your chair’ bloomerific displays! Oh, it is just a dahlia – says no one this time of year. The sheer variety of size, color and shape options allow landscape lovers to choose many favorites. The combinations of flowers are endless and as bountiful as zucchinis but not as unwanted. Cut as bouquets, relished in cherished sightlines in the landscape or given away as tubers to garden buddies they are a gift that truly keeps giving.
And if you are without, now is the moment to flock to the Volunteer Park or Belleve Botanical Dahlia Gardens and take your camera and note pad to jot down those you pinky-swear promise to add to your garden. Bless the good people of the Puget Sound Dahlia Assocation for not only planting and maintaining these gardens but also allowing you to purchase “A Monthly Guide” to assist you in growing them. And if you really want to take the plunge, you can join and they have many easy to attend zoom meetings. You might even ‘see’ me there. And for those with an affinity for cameras and pics of dahlias, you have come to the right location. There is a beautiful slide show of the 2022 photo winners which will be sure to inspire you to take another step and do dahlias!
