In keeping with the Pantone Color of the Year choice for 2026 (Cloud Dancer), I’m excited to highlight how white shows up in my garden. Some of these choices are long-loved perennials that return each year; others are new additions inspired by Cloud Dancer’s soft, luminous presence. Each month, I’ll share how this color weaves into my existing landscape and how it guides my design decisions for the seasons ahead.
A crisp winter garden can still feel alive—especially with white blooms that shine against January’s muted backdrop. This month’s focus is on the elegant, white, cold-season flowers that are blooming now and perfect for gardeners in the Pacific Northwest – and a peek at the Cloud Dancer inspired choice I’m making for the coming year
White flowers glow in low winter light, brighten shaded corners, and pair beautifully with evergreen structure. In February — when most plants rest — these resilient bloomers offer purity, contrast, and quiet drama that sit beautifully among the sparkling frost. Blooming now in my garden;
Galanthus = snowdrops
Snowdrops are the garden’s earliest whisper of spring. Their nodding white bells push through cold soil and leaf litter with surprising determination. Planted in drifts, they create a gentle, naturalized carpet that brightens woodland edges and shady corners.
Helleborus ‘Jacob’ or ‘North Star Crystalline’
Hellebores are winter’s quiet showstoppers. White varieties — from pure ivory to soft green-tinted blooms — offer long-lasting flowers that persist for weeks. Their evergreen foliage anchors winter beds, and their subtle downward-facing blooms invite you to lean in and appreciate their detail.
Winter containers with white accents contain;
Pansies, dusty miller, white ornamental cabbage and grey blue grass (Festuca ‘Beyond Blue’) all set against deep green hellebore leaves. The interplay of whites, silvers, and cool blues creates a soft Cloud Dancer effect even on the coldest days.
As I plan for the coming year, I couldn’t resist adding a few Cloud Dancer–inspired edibles and annuals to my seed order. This year I’m branching out with:
- Miniature white cucumbers
- Baby boo pumpkins
- Jimi’s snowflakes poppy (yes flowers are part of my veg spaces)
